The City of Reykjavík intends to step up efforts to increase recycling and reduce the amount of garbage the city produces.

RÚV reports that the plan of action extends to 2020. This will include increasing the types of recycling that are picked up by sanitation workers, and reducing the waste that the city produces.

As noble as the cause may be, it has not been met without criticism. Progressive city councilperson Guðfinna Jóhanna Guðmundsdóttir criticised the measure, in particular because she contends the city majority coalition intends to pass the measure without having first drawn up a proper assessment for what it would cost.

As it is, paper and plastic is collected by sanitation workers, but city residents need to take any other recyclables to one of the recycling centres in the capital area. This can prove logistically difficult for people who do not have a car.

No definitive date has been set for when the plan will roll into action.
